Urinary incontinence is a medical issue that is common among females in which there is a loss of control of the pelvic muscles, leading to an involuntary release of urine or an uncontrollable impulse to urinate. This is the result of aging and wear and tear on the body, and is more commonly found in women due to the stress placed on a woman?s pelvic muscles during childbirth. While this condition does not signal that there is a serious underlying medical issue, it is still an unpleasant experience for the afflicted.

Two types of incontinence are most common in women, though other types do exist. The two main types are stress incontinence and urge incontinence. Stress incontinence is described as an accidental trickle of urine from the bladder as a result of other bodily movement. Urge incontinence is a sudden, uncontrollable impulse to urinate, often leading into accidental release of urine. When someone suffers from both stress and urge incontinence, this is called mixed incontinence. Other types of incontinence include total and reflex incontinence, though these are less common.

There are multiple causes of incontinence, and the causes of stress incontinence and urge incontinence differ. Stress incontinence is mainly caused by childbirth, which is indicative of why incontinence is more common in women than it is in men. Childbirth creates heavy strain on a woman?s pelvic muscles, leading to a weakened pelvic floor and less control of the bladder. Weight gain, menopause or injury can also contribute to stress incontinence. On the other hand, urge incontinence is the result of nerve damage to the bladder. This nerve damage can be the result of other medical issues such as diabetes, Parkinson?s disease, multiple sclerosis or a stroke.

Upon a patient seeing a doctor to cure their urinary incontinence, the doctor will typically ask that the patient keeps a diary for a few days (or weeks) before the appointment time in order to detail their incontinence. The patient will be asked to record what items they ate or drank and detail the severity and frequency of their incontinence, in order to diagnose what factors (bodily, environmentally, or otherwise) are contributing to their incontinence. The doctor will also check the patient?s urethra for any blockages or damage, and will conduct tests on the bladder to determine how much urine it can hold.

There are a number of treatments available in reducing or eliminating urinary incontinence. The most popular method is through kegel exercises, which can be done from the comfort of your own home and only take minutes to perform. These exercises, which involve clenching and releasing the pelvic muscles, help strengthen the pelvic floor and help regain control of the bladder. Medication can also be taken to control nerve impulses in the bladder which can lead to involuntary bladder functioning. Surgery may be required for extreme cases where there is significant damage to the bladder and surrounding tissues. Dietary changes are also recommended to help with incontinence. By following these measures, the afflicted can restore health to their bladder and regain control of bladder functioning.
