Home Depot encourages product sales via mobile ads - Advertising ...
Home Depot is continuing to prove that mobile advertising plays a critical role in its mobile commerce strategy with a new campaign that aims?to bolster sales for its?power tools and home appliances.
In addition to encouraging consumers to buy the products via Home Depot?s mobile site, the campaign also includes location and click-to-call features that help drive in-store traffic. The ads are running within Flixster?s iPhone application.
?The strategy is to reach consumers where they are as opposed to where they used to be. Traditionally, home improvement retailers would run their major promotions using printed circulars, but consumer media habits have changed dramatically in a very short period of time,? said Greg Hallinan, chief marketing officer at Verve Wireless, Encinitas, CA.
?In other words, consumers are on their devices while simultaneously engaged with other media, usually television ? this presents a great opportunity for retailers to move consumers further down the sales funnel, by either augmenting their other media spends or countering a competitor?s media spend,? he said.
?For example, it is not hard to imagine the scenario where a consumer views a Lowe?s advertisement on TV, say during a sporting event, while a Home Depot ad is presented on their mobile device that the consumer is using while watching the sporting event to pull stats, catch-up on the day?s news or play a game. Which one do you think the consumer takes action on??
Mr. Hallinan is not associated with Home Depot. He commented based on his expertise on the subject.
Home Depot did not respond to press inquiries.
Mobile improvement
The Home Depot ads include two separate pieces of creative ? one for power tools and one for kitchen appliances.
For example, the ad that promotes kitchen appliances reads, ?Power up with the appliance you?ve been eyeing.?
The creative for the ads are smart because although consumers might not be willing to make a spontaneous decision to buy a new appliance on the spot, the campaign is aimed at consumers who already know what they are looking for.
Unlike many mobile advertising campaigns, there is a clear demographic that Home Depot is honing in on with the initiative.
Once users tap on the ad, they are taken to Home Depot?s mobile site that is filtered to only include the type of product advertised.
Consumers can then browse through categories or type in keywords if they are looking for something specific.
The ad shows filtered results
Users can then add products to their shopping carts and check-out while still in the ad.
Consumers are buying appliances via their devices
Additionally, users can find the nearest Home Depot store by using their device?s location or contact the company directly with a click-to-call feature.
Giving consumers the option to find the nearest location is especially important for a retailer such as Home Depot that has higher-ticket items.
Multichannel retailer
Home Depot has had a strong year in mobile so far.
In January, the company became the first national retailer to pilot PayPal?s mobile wallet service.
Using Paypal?s point-of-sale service, consumers can can either type in their phone number that is tied with a carrier?s account or pay with a PayPal-issued credit card. (see story).
Additionally, Home Depot also recently used a tablet-first strategy with a design lookbook iPad app that lets users find inspiration and shop for items in their homes (see story).
Each of Home Depot?s advertising campaigns are tailored for a specific promotion or demographic, which makes users more inclined to tap on the ad.
For example, around the holidays the company used a time-sensitive campaign to promote special prices on tools.
?Providing options to complete the transaction on the terms defined by the consumer is both considerate of the time-constrained consumer and helps mitigate some of the showrooming effect that retailers are experiencing in-store ? it is just good business,? Mr. Hallinan said.
?Consumers are mobile and demanding that retailers either meet them in their mobile world or risk losing their business to someone who does,? he said.

Did banks cross the line in Facebook research calls?
NEW YORK (Reuters) - As regulators scrutinize Facebook's
Facebook and the Wall Street banks that underwrote its $16 billion initial public offering are facing questions about how and why stock analysts decided to cut their financial forecasts on the company ahead of the IPO.
An Internet analyst at lead underwriter Morgan Stanley
JPMorgan Chase
The Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth said late Tuesday that his office had issued a subpoena to Morgan Stanley related to the communications involving the analyst. The Financial Industry Regulatory Authority also said it plans to look at the matter, while the chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said the agency will examine unspecified issues stemming from Facebook's IPO.
Morgan Stanley said late Tuesday that its procedures for the social media company's IPO were "in compliance with all applicable regulations."
Several rules and regulations could be relevant in any investigation into whether analysts violated disclosure rules, given their banks' access to confidential information from Facebook in the IPO process.
Another important area of inquiry could be whether analysts chose only favored clients to share their forecast revisions with - although such selective treatment may not be prohibited. But even if the conduct does not cross the line legally, it could damage a firm's reputation in the eyes of retail clients who feel left out.
The timing of the Morgan Stanley analyst's forecast revision surprised some investors, who said it may have contributed to the weak performance of Facebook shares. It has also raised questions about access to information and whether federal securities laws were violated.
So-called "gun jumping" rules set out by the SEC, for example, regulate the communications that can be made about an issuer outside its prospectus.
Generally, information disseminated cannot be inconsistent with what is provided in the prospectus, said Adam Pritchard, a securities law professor at the University of Michigan and a former SEC enforcement attorney.
But Pritchard added that there is an exception for oral communications.
"That's the big exception to the gun-jumping rules," he said.
When public companies selectively disclose information, they can run afoul of a rule known as Regulation Fair Disclosure, which requires that material information be disclosed to investors at the same time. But that rule would not apply to information that Facebook provided to its underwriters before it went public, according to securities law experts.
Another set of rules that could be relevant address the communications made by the underwriters. One rule prohibits an analyst who works at the firm underwriting the offering from issuing a report on a company before it goes public.
The Morgan Stanley analyst, Scott Devitt, gave his revision to major clients of the firm in at least one conference call, though it's unclear if his revised view was also spread more widely. Devitt did not return a phone message seeking comment.
An oral communication by an analyst may not violate the rule on prohibited research reports, said Jill Fisch, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
"If the analyst is just cautioning a customer on what the disclosure means or what's in the prospectus, I'm not sure that is technically inconsistent with the rule," she said.
Provisions of a 2003 settlement that regulators reached with investment banks could also come into play. Major Wall Street banks agreed to reforms after they were accused of using their research units to hype initial public offerings that analysts privately held in low regard.
Under that settlement, the banks agreed to take steps to ensure the independence of their research units. They agreed, for example, to prohibit analysts from participating in road shows and other efforts to solicit investment banking business.
If an analyst were found to be working with the investment bankers taking a company public, that could be a violation of the settlement, said Thomas Gorman, a partner at the law firm Dorsey & Whitney and author of the SEC Actions blog.
He suggested that Wall Street's history with IPOs shows that these offerings can be rife with conflicts for banks.
"Morgan Stanley's researchers should not be opining on the IPO at the same time they are acting as lead underwriters," he said.

Donors pledge $4 bln aid to Yemen
Donors, with Saudi Arabia in the lead, pledged $4 billion (3.2 billion euros) in aid to impoverished Yemen on Wednesday as it grapples with a fragile political transition and struggles to contain a growing threat by Al-Qaeda.
"The conference today has allocated $4 billion dollars," Britain's junior foreign minister, Alistair Burt, said at the end of the Friends of Yemen meeting in Riyadh, saying London would contributed $44 million.
At the opening of the meeting, Saudi Arabia said it would give neighbouring Yemen $3.25 billion, and urged other nations to follow suit.
"To ensure Yemen's security and stability, the kingdom will provide $3.25 billion to support development projects there which will be agreed upon with the Yemeni side," Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal said.
"The Yemeni government is exerting courageous efforts, but without the help of its brothers and friends, Yemen will not be able to solve the crises it is facing," said Prince Saud, who described the meeting as "positive."
Support for Yemen "includes providing expertise and help in all fields including economy, security and military," he said.
Yemeni Prime Minister Mohammed Basindawa pleaded for aid for his country, rocked by an uprising last year that forced former president Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down in February.
"The hope is in the political and economic support needed to overcome the transitional period and put an end to the budget deficit," Basindawa said.
"We are confident that you realise the danger and sensitivity of the situation in Yemen which needs lots and lots to recover ... We seek your help; don't fail us."
Yemeni Planning Minister Mohammed al-Saadi had told AFP his country will ask for about $10 billion in urgent aid at the meeting.
So far only 43 percent of $455 million earlier asked for by the UN and other organisations has been received for humanitarian aid for Yemen, with ongoing conflicts in the country's north and south only exacerbating the crisis.
Prince Saud said two agreements "worth $105 million will be signed in the health and power sectors" on Wednesday, adding that Riyadh had also recently provided support to Yemen's petrol and power sectors.
Basindawa said his government is planning development projects that needed funds and were part of a 2012-2013 programme aimed at reviving the economy and stabilising the security, political and social situation.
"The plan includes several projects in the fields of economy, politics, humanitarian assistance and reforms," said Basindawa.
On Wednesday, seven aid groups warned diplomats that Yemen was on the brink of a "catastrophic food crisis" and urged them to bolster efforts to salvage the situation.
At least 10 million people, some 44 percent of the population, do not get "enough food to eat", they said, adding that one in three children was "severely malnourished."
Saadi told AFP on Wednesday that there "is an urgent humanitarian need estimated at $470 million to help more than 500,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Abyan and Saada" provinces in the south and north.
He said investment projects "important as they are, can be postponed, but not humanitarian aid."
In the past two months alone, aid agencies say more than 95,000 people have been forced to flee their homes, bringing the total number to more than half a million.
Twenty-seven countries, including the six oil-rich Gulf Cooperation Council states, the United States and Britain, as well as international organisations, are attending the Riyadh meeting, the first since President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi took power on February 21.
In addition to poverty, Hadi's rule is challenged by a growing threat of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), considered by the United States as the most active branch of the global terror network.
"Security and stability are necessary for development" in Yemen, Prince Saud said.
Burt, who described the role of GCC states in Yemen as "remarkable and significant," said: "We should not underestimate what was achieved in Yemen."
On Monday, a suicide bomber dressed as a soldier, detonated explosives among soldiers of an army battalion in central Sanaa, killing 96 soldiers of them, in an attack claimed by AQAP.
"The appalling explosion that took place in Yemen and left hundreds martyred and wounded needs utmost attention from you to Yemen," Basindawa said.
As the meeting took place, the army pressed on in south Yemen an offensive against Al-Qaeda bastions leaving six Yemeni soldiers and 22 jihadists dead Wednesday, a security official and locals said.
That raised the death toll from the operations to 262 people killed in 12 days.
The Friends of Yemen forum was set up at an international conference in London in January 2010 to help Sanaa combat a resurgent threat from Al-Qaeda in the ancestral homeland of its slain leader, Osama bin Laden, as well as other security challenges.

Major U.S. Cable companies join together to offer over 50000 WiFi ...
While we don?t normally have an issue getting data connectivity over 3G, 4G, and LTE, there are still bad areas and the concern for limited data plans. Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Cox Communications, and Time Warner Cable joined forces to offer over 50,000 WiFi hotspots. Unfortunately it?s still in the early stages so it?s only available in New York City (and surrounding Tri-State area), Los Angeles, Tampa, Orlando, and Philadelphia. Hotspots can be found in both indoor and outdoor areas and include high traffic locations, such as shopping districts, cafes, malls, arenas, restaurants, parks, and beaches.?They do plan on expanding into more markets.
You will need to be a subscriber of one of the above cable networks and when traveling outside your area, you will look for the ?CableWiFi? network and sign in with your regular sign-in credentials from your regular provider. Eventually they will make it so devices auto-connect when in range of any of the ?CableWiFi? hotspots.

Major U.S. Cable Companies Join Forces on WiFi
Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable Will Share Access to over 50,000 Hotspots, Expand WiFi Availability and Simplify Access for their High Speed Internet Customers
BOSTON?(BUSINESS WIRE)?Bright House Networks, Cablevision, Comcast, Cox Communications and Time Warner Cable today announce that they will enable each other?s high-speed Internet customers to access their metro WiFi networks, totaling over 50,000 hotspots. To simplify access, a new network name, ?CableWiFi?, has been created for subscribers to use when accessing the WiFi hotspots outside their home market. The first implementation is already complete as Bright House Networks and Cablevision launched ?CableWiFi? alongside their branded WiFi networks in the New York City area and central Florida earlier this month. Over the next few months, the ?CableWiFi? network name will be added by each of the cable companies to their branded WiFi hotspots.
?This effort adds great value to our high speed Internet customers by providing free wireless Internet access on all of their WiFi enabled devices in our markets and additional areas across the country,? said Nomi Bergman, President of Bright House Networks.
?We believe that WiFi is a superior approach to mobile data, and that cable providers are best positioned to build the highest-capacity national network offering customers fast and reliable Internet connections when away from their home or business broadband service,? said Kristin Dolan, Cablevision?s senior executive vice president of product management and marketing. ?We?ve built an extensive WiFi network in our own service area, and see real value and potential in other leading providers joining with us to extend that connectivity to major markets across the country.?
Dave Watson, Chief Operating Officer of Comcast Cable added, ?Mobility is an increasingly important part of our Xfinity services product roadmap. WiFi technology, coupled with our agreements with Verizon Wireless, are two significant ways we are executing on our strategy to deliver the best in- and out-of-home communications experience for our customers.?
?The way customers are using our service continues to evolve,? said Jill Campbell, Cox Communications COO. ?This is a new area of opportunity that we need to explore.?
?We have long been the leading providers of high-speed internet services in our customers? homes. Through our rollout of WiFi and the benefits of this collaboration we greatly increase the value and reach of our high-speed internet service, providing access to broadband outside the home and in cities across the country,? said Rob Marcus, President and COO of Time Warner Cable.
When traveling outside their home markets, high-speed Internet subscribers of the participating companies will look for the ?CableWiFi? network and through a simple sign-on process connect using the same credentials as when accessing their providers? WiFi networks. In the coming months, users will be able to have their devices auto-connect to the Internet when located in any of the ?Cable WiFi? hotspots.
The participating cable operators currently offer more than 50,000 WiFi hotspots located in New York City and the surrounding Tri-State area, Los Angeles, Tampa, Orlando, and Philadelphia. The operators plan to continue to grow the number of WiFi hotspots and expand into several additional cities. The network has both indoor and outdoor WiFi hotspots located in popular, high traffic locations, such as shopping districts, cafes, malls, arenas, restaurants, parks and beaches. Subscribers will be able to find the nearest WiFi hotspots by visiting the WiFi homepage of their current cable provider or going to?www.cablewifi.com
This is the largest and most inclusive WiFi sharing effort among cable operators to date. In early 2010, Cablevision, Comcast and Time Warner Cable entered into an agreement allowing their customers in New York City, Long Island, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Connecticut to access WiFi hotspots offered by each operator in these areas.
