Canon PowerShot Elph 110 HS
The Canon PowerShot Elph 110 HS ($249.99 direct) is another example of a high-resolution compact camera that provides excellent sharpness, but falls a bit short in terms of high ISO performance. Design and Features
Taking its design cues from many other members of the current Elph family, the 110 HS features rounded edges and a metal exterior and is available in a variety of colors: black, blue, green, pink, red, or silver. It measures 2.2 by 3.7 by 0.8 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.8 ounces?making it only a tenth of an inch larger and a tenth of an ounce heavier than the Elph 310 HS. The camera's rear LCD is 3 inches in size and boasts a 461k-dot resolution, which is bright and sharp for a camera in this class?it's got twice the pixels as the 230k-dot screen found on the Samsung ST80 ($249.99, 3 stars).
You get a 5x (24-120mm equivalent) zoom lens, which delivers a wider field of view, but less telephoto reach than the 8x (28-224mm) lens that is packed into the 310 HS's equally compact body. The extra-wide field of view sets the 110 HS apart from the crowd?it can capture wide-angle scenes that a camera with a 28mm lens just isn't capable of. One issue with the lens is the amount of noise it makes when zooming in or out. The motor is much louder than that of other compact cameras, to the point where it could be distracting when used in a quieter social situation.
You'll find all of the standard controls on the camera?which is impressive when you consider its size. There are dedicated controls for Exposure Compensation, Macro mode, Flash control, and Movie recording. A top-mounted switch makes it easy to toggle between Auto and Program modes. Performance and Conclusions
Like other Canon cameras that bear the HS moniker, the Elph 110 HS does a good job in terms of speed. It can start up and grab a shot in about 2.1 seconds, records a 0.2-second shutter lag, and can shoot continuously with 0.6 second between photos. This leaves the pokey Samsung SH100 ($199.99, 3 stars) in the dust?that camera requires 3.5 seconds to boot and shoot, records a half-second shutter lag, and makes you wait a full 2.7 seconds between shots.
I used Imatest to measure the sharpness of photos captured by the Elph 110 HS, and the results were actually quite good. We consider a sharp image to be one that contains a center-weighted average of 1,800 lines per picture height, and the 110 HS exceeded that?recording 2,189 lines. In this regard the camera ran circles around the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH27 ($229.95, 2.5 stars), a camera that only managed 1,548 lines.
High ISO performance was another matter entirely. We consider a clean image to be one that contains less than 1.5 percent noise. The Elph 110 HS was only able to keep noise under this threshold through ISO 200, a surprisingly low setting.? That said, it only registered about 1.6 percent at ISO 400 and ISO 800, so it isn't going to produce terribly grainy photos at higher ISO settings. That's the good news. The bad news is that the camera applies some pretty aggressive noise reduction to hit even these just-ok numbers. Detail is slightly diminished at ISO 400, but you can still make out textures and fine lines in the image. At ISO 800 it's bad, and at ISO 1600 it's pretty terrible?any semblance of texture is gone from your photo by that point. ?The Canon PowerShot Elph 310 HS does a much better job both in terms of image noise and preservation of detail?it keeps noise under 1.5 percent through ISO 800, while managing to do a great job with image detail through ISO 400. At ISO 800 it's not that bad at all, although at ISO 1600 the 310 HS is also a victim of some heavy-handed noise reduction.
HD video comes in two flavors: 1080p24 or 720p30. Movie clips are saved in QuickTime format, with H.264 compression, and look very nice. Video is sharp and colors are crisp. The camera can zoom while recording, but the sound of the lens moving is quite audible on the soundtrack. The camera is compatible with standard SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards, and features mini USB and mini HDMI ports for computer and HDTV connectivity.
The PowerShot Elph 110 HS is a good compact camera, but not a great one. Its lens is sharp, but Canon's decision to cram 16 megapixels onto a tiny sensor results in noisy images at higher ISO settings. The camera attempts to counteract this with noise reduction, but only serves to kill detail in photos at higher ISOs. This won't be a problem on smaller-size screens, but if you want to share your photos on larger LCDs or prints, the lack of texture and detail at higher ISO settings will be noticeable.
Canon also turns out to be its own worst enemy here?if the PowerShot 310 HS wasn't available for a mere $10 more, the 110 HS would be easier to recommend. The 310 HS, which earned our Editors' Choice award for midrange compact cameras, features a nearly identical design and a more impressive 8x zoom lens. It does have fewer megapixels and its lens doesn't provide the extra-wide 24mm field of view of the 110 HS, but when you consider the noise reduction that the 110 HS requires to shoot images at ISO 800 and above, you really aren't losing much in terms of image quality when shooting in anything but bright light.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? Kansas coach Bill Self would love nothing more than to reprise two epic regular-season games against bitter rival Missouri this weekend. The reason is quite simple.
"That means we win tomorrow," he said. "We got our hands full big-time tomorrow."
No kidding.
The third-ranked Jayhawks cruised into the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament with an 83-66 victory over Texas A&M on Thursday, while the fifth-ranked Tigers coasted into the semifinals in their half of the bracket with an equally easy 88-70 win over Oklahoma State.
But before Kansas can focus on another match-up with Missouri, Thomas Robinson and Co. have to deal with No. 12 Baylor, which got a career-best 31 points from Perry Jones III in an 82-74 win over Kansas State that was never really as close as the final score indicated.
"They're so talented, it's a joke," Self said with a grimace.
Missouri will have to find a way past Texas, which needed a 22-4 run in the second half to dispatch No. 25 Iowa State 71-65 in Thursday's nightcap. J'Covan Brown finished with 23 points for the Longhorns, converting the go-ahead three-point play in the closing seconds.
Provided both teams win, though, Missouri and Kansas would make for a tantalizing finale.
The Jayhawks squandered a big lead in the closing minutes when the teams met in Columbia, and Missouri returned the favor by blowing a 19-point lead in an overtime loss in Lawrence.
With Missouri heading to the SEC next season and officials from Kansas have saying they have no intention of playing the Tigers out of conference, that was the final scheduled regular-season match-up between two teams that have played for more than 100 years. There's still simmering anger that Missouri nearly torpedoed the Big 12 with its decision to leave.
The fire was fanned even more this week when Self proclaimed that Kansas City, which lies on Interstate 70 between the two campuses, is more of a "Kansas town" than a "Missouri town."
"Marcus (Denmon) was born and raised in Kansas City," replied Tigers guard Kim English, no stranger to controversial statements. "Mike Dixon, Steve Moore, Jarrett Sutton, Andrew Jones. The city has adopted me. So this is our city."
Yes, lines have certainly been drawn, and one of them goes right through the Sprint Center.
Assuming, of course, Kansas and Missouri take care of business Friday night.
The Bears looked dominant against Kansas State, which had surged into the Big 12 tournament having won four of its last five games. Jones made all eight of his shots in the first half, Brady Heslip finished with 15 points and Baylor never allowed the lead to dwindle below five points in the second half, despite a virtuoso performance by the Wildcats' Jordan Henriquez.
He finished with a career-high 22 points and 14 rebounds.
"We were so bad defensively today," Kansas State coach Frank Martin. "They're a heck of a basketball team. I don't want to take away from them, their moment, because they won the game. But defensively, we were so selfish today. We didn't help each other."
Baylor made it look easy in their flashy new fluorescent green uniforms.
Kansas made it look even easier in their tried-and-true home whites.
Elijah Johnson poured in a career-high 26 points, Robinson added 19 points and 10 rebounds, and the Jayhawks built a 20-point lead on Texas A&M before taking it easy down the stretch.
Khris Middleton finished with 24 points for the Aggies.
In some ways, Oklahoma State's Keiton Page knew how Middleton felt.
The high-scoring guard had 22 points for the Cowboys, but it wasn't nearly enough against a Missouri team clicking on all cylinders. English scored 27 points, Denmon added 24 and sophomore guard Phil Pressey contributed 12 assists, one shy of a school record.
"Their defense was just stifling," Oklahoma State coach Travis Ford said. "They played with such great energy. We were tired. I could see it. They're a veteran, experienced, physically tough basketball team. They might not be the tallest team, but they are a physical team. We're just the opposite. We're young. And they were playing to their strengths. Their defense led to offense."
It led to a date with Texas, too.
The Longhorns may have needed to knock off the Cyclones in the quarterfinals to get into the NCAA tournament, and things looked dire when they fell behind by 11 in the second half. But a 22-4 spurt turned the game around, and Brown delivered in the closing minutes.
"Let's just say we are on the bubble," Texas coach Rick Barnes recalled telling his team at halftime. "Now if I write down NIT or NCAA, which one would you put your name under? Which one? Whichever one you want, you have to earn it."
At the very least, they earned a spot in the Big 12 tournament semifinals.
Right along with the Jayhawks, Bears and Tigers.

Fullhouse is a themed lifestyle store and cafe that has a car parked inside, water fountain, topiary, birds, and clothes, among other things.
Stuff To Do While You Wait For Your Food
No, we?re not joking. There?s a green mini that?s a lot cuter than Mr. Bean?s yellow ride on the first floor entrance. We?re not sure if there?s a working engine in there for you to take it for a joyride, but we?re pretty sure you can sit in it to take your poser pics in. Note: Kids (and some adults) would love this!
Also, we weren?t kidding about the clothes either. Thank goodness the wardrobe doesn?t belong to someone?s Aunty Wilma.
They do however hold brand new women?s clothes you can try on (in a fitting room) and take home for a price.
Interestingly, like a scene out of a woman?s bedroom two hours before her first date, there?s a bed in there with accessories spread across for easy picking. This will go deep with some ladies, who won?t be able to resist grabbing some ornaments to decorate themselves with.
Now that you?ve seen some trinkets and stuff, let?s take a look at the space!
Occupying 6 shoplots on 2 floors in Suria Sabah, this 7,000+ sq.ft concept cafe is a franchise from Kuala Lumpur. As the biggest standalone eatery in a Sabah mall, we were delighted to see Fullhouse ?full? both of the days we visited!
Ground Floor
If you enter from the side entrance on the ground floor, you?ll see the kitchen on the right side where drinks and food are prepared.
Once you are in there?s a dining area and an opulent velvet sofa facing the main entrance.
We love how much natural light it gets during the day.
The ground floor also has a raised platform stage with speakers, some dining tables.
Taking the stairs up, we imagine you?ll be more amused with what you?ll see.
First Floor
The dining area on the first floor is massive by mall standards. There?s the main dining area, a garden area, and also the outdoor area where the verandah is. Check it out!

The access into the restaurant from the first floor is through the garden area.
There?s a water fountain in the middle, which sets a rather serene and comforting mood for diners.
Verandah Area
For those who prefer the open air instead of air-conditioning, there?s an outdoor area with a verandah overlooking a major artery going into the city.
This is also where smoking is permitted.
Big Enough for a Small Wedding Ceremony & Other Themed Parties
The homely setting is big enough to hold themed parties.
In fact, Chris Shaw?s wedding ceremony was held there the day before, complete with vow exchanges, live music entertainment, and a buffet spread with more than 100 people zipping in and out of the space.
By looks alone, we were impressed with what we saw. But what about the food you say?!?! Most people loved the food at the wedding as there were lots of quality ingredients that went into the buffet spread. But we read some lackluster reviews online about their regular menu, but wasn?t going to knock it until we tried it.
So, we tried it!
Food
Smoked Salmon Salad
We ordered a Smoked Salmon Salad to start (RM 16.90). This was lovely with the fanned mango slices, a milder and fresher alternative to capers. There?s nothing to complain about unless you can find me other places in KK that serve twirls of smoked salmon that doesn?t involve paying for an expensive hotel buffet.
We are just glad there?s a place to go to for our smoked fish fix.
Al-Funghi Spaghetti
The ?butter base? al-funghi spaghetti was? buttery. I personally prefer olive oil with my pastas (which are options they have with other types of pasta dishes), but I can imagine other people really digging the butter thing. The Asianized-dish came with a generous amount of oyster mushrooms and bits of bird chillies in them. Warning: Spicy-spicy stuff!
Admittedly, we?ve eaten better spaghetti outside of Italy, but Fullhouse is more of a family casual cafe-concept restaurant and not a fine dining establishment. I thought it was acceptable for the price and ambiance (RM15.90).
NZ-Ribeye Steak
The steak, however, was one of the best pieces of beef I?ve had for RM36.90 in KK. Saying that, the sauce didn?t do the meat justice. Will I have it again? You bet I will!
Loved the marbling and texture, and while it isn?t as fine as an aged Angus or Wagyu steak, it is the best it can get at the thirty ringgit mark. My favorite dish there so far!
Lamb Chops
GourmetSailor had the lamb shoulder for RM30.60. The portion size of meat was generous, but the sides were lean, which we liked. Low carb anyone?
He said they could do with tenderizing the lamb more, but this is not something we want to make a big deal out of, because it?s not (unless it becomes a feature). If this can be improved pretty quickly, it?ll be dandy.
Are We Making Excuses for Them?
Well not really, because we take context into account.
Fact: We like more places to eat in KK.
Fact: We love awesome environments to hang out with our friends and family.
Fact: We love reasonable prices for reasonably decent food.
And Fullhouse meets all of those and more. BRAVO!
Sure, any new establishment has room for improvement. But they?ve only been open for less than a week and have performed admirably by any standard. I can?t wait to hang out there again if it?s only for a pot of tea and to try a pair of earrings on.
Well, maybe I?ll order that steak again.

There has been a lack of consensus within the scientific and health communities about the definitions and terms to describe celiac disease and other gluten-related disorders. ?To gain international consensus, 16 physicians from 7 countries came together to create the Oslo definitions for celiac disease and gluten related disorders. ?Attached are links to the original article and a related opinion article.
