Facebook updates iPhone app to speed it up iPhones

MENLO PARK, Calif. ? What?s the biggest complaint about Facebook?s iPhone app? Users say it?s slow.
Facebook Inc. says it?s addressing those gripes, with the launch of a new, faster version of the app for Apple?s iPhone and iPad on Thursday. Rather than add a slew of new features, the company said it rebuilt the application from scratch to make it speedier and less clunky.
At a recent demonstration at the company?s Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters, the new iPhone app opened about twice as fast as the older version. Photos and comments also load faster. Users can now ?like? comments on photos, which wasn?t possible with the previous mobile app.
Mick Johnson, mobile product manager at Facebook, said programmers removed some lesser-used features, such as a way to view the app horizontally, to help speed it up.
The mobile arena presents Facebook with its biggest challenge ?and its biggest opportunity. That?s where its user base is growing the most. At the end of June, Facebook had 543 million users who accessed it with a phone or tablet computer, up 67 percent from 325 million a year earlier. Its overall user base grew 29 percent over the same time period, to 955 million.
But while Facebook ads are well-established on its website, the company only recently started experimenting with mobile advertisements. That?s been a concern for investors, who?ve sent Facebook?s stock down by nearly half since the company?s initial public offering three months ago.
The iPad version of the new app now features Timeline, the latest version of the profile page that Facebook is rolling out to all of its users.
The app is available for free from Apple?s App Store.
Still absent from Facebook?s app is any integration of Instagram. That?s because Facebook hasn?t closed the acquisition of the photo-sharing app. Thought it got a step closer Wednesday, when the Federal Trade Commission said it has closed its investigation into Facebook?s planned acquisition.
The FTC said it is not taking action on the deal, which can now go forward as planned. Facebook has agreed to buy Instagram in a cash and stock deal worth about $748 million, based on Facebook?s stock price on Thursday. The price tag had been about $1 billion when the companies initiated the deal before Facebook?s IPO, in April.

Molokai Ranch sells Kaunakakai property to University of Hawaii
Molokai Ranch has sold 3.2 acres in Kaunakakai to the University of Hawaii, according to ranch owner Molokai Properties Ltd.
The property is next to the existing University of Hawaii Maui College Molokai Education Center, and the purchase will help the university expand educational facilities on the Friendly Isle, according to an announcement.
The purchase price was not immediately disclosed.
"This purchase will eventually expand the college's Molokai Education Center and strengthen our capacity to provide more higher education and economic opportunities," said Maui College Chancellor Clyde Sakamoto. "Critical to this outcome will be community input to realistically leverage public and private resources to create new possibilities for Molokai. Long-range planning will now begin in earnest."
Molokai Ranch Chief Executive Officer Clay Rumbaoa said: "UH Maui College on Molokai provides great opportunities for our community, and we couldn't be more pleased to play a role in their expansion through this sale.
"We look forward to being able to partner with them in the future to bring specialty workshops and other activities to the residents of Molokai," Rumbaoa added.
Approximately 250 students study at the Molokai Education Center. They can pursue certificate and associate degrees in seven primary majors, including liberal arts, agriculture and natural resources, business careers, early-childhood education, Hawaiian studies, human services and allied health.
Plans to include UH Maui College's three bachelor's of science degrees are under way.
A variety of bachelor's and master's degrees are also available from other UH campuses, facilitated by University Center, Maui, which connects Molokai students to UH-Manoa, UH-Hilo and UH-West Oahu through interactive television, off island travel and the Internet.

Facebook For Android Gets A Fantastic Update
I?ve had some serious issues with Facebook on my Motorola Atrix 2 and my Transformer Pad recently. The Transformer Pad has been fine with it since before I updated it to Jelly Bean. Even though Facebook is known for its continuous updates with the app, they seem to have finally released a fix and/or performance boost. Thankfully, my phone is now working with Facebook after the update, however, my tablet is still questionable. But, that wasn?t really the center point of this update, now was it?
Facebook has made it easier for those who are constantly on the go. They now have made it extremely easy to share important items with both your friends and family through some new and enhances features. The first thing they?ve added to the application is the ability to both create and share events. I think many of us can imagine why that?s helpful, especially if you?re phone and/or tablet has replaced your laptop or desktop. The second thing Facebook has added is supposed a faster flow for sharing photos. Also, those of you that are using the Messenger service will be extremely excited to find out that the ability to add photos and emoji has been added to messages. This is actually a much-needed feature for the mobile app as it made it extremely difficult to share photos in certain ways.
Facebook?s goal has always been to make it easier to share your life with your loved ones or even to friends across the world. The update reaffirms that statement by adding some much needed features to the app. Just head on over to the Google Play Store and you?ll be able to download the app directly from there, as you probably know. Unfortunately, for some reason it didn?t just download the added code (unless Facebook hadn?t started using that newest feature on Google Play yet) but instead downloaded the full blown app. It?s only around 12MB so it?s really not so bad unless your on the last edge of your data plan and you?re completely freaking out about even the thought of turning your phone on. That?s pretty unlikely though.
Now if only Facebook would redesign the application. I mean, it?s pretty slick now, but I actually really am sort of jealous of the new design the iPhone had gotten just today. I really wish that they would incorporate some of that goodness over to us Android users. Still, I?m personally just happy that Facebook is working on my smartphone again. I can now happily return to my addiction anytime I want wherever I am (then again, this could be potentially be a REALLY bad thing).

Angola's $17 bln energy drive will help poor: Dos Santos

HUAMBO, Angola (Reuters) - Angola's plans to invest more than $17 billion in electricity generation and distribution by 2016 are designed to increase social justice by giving low-income classes better access to energy, President Jose Eduardo dos Santos said on Wednesday.
Investment in energy will also help develop industry and create jobs, Dos Santos said in a campaign speech to tens of thousands of supporters of his MPLA party in Angola's second-largest city, Huambo, ahead of an August 31 general election.
"Increased supply of electricity is a factor of social justice which I consider of great importance, because it is the most needy in society, those who do not have resources to buy a generator, that are most harmed," he added.
A 27-year civil war that ended a decade ago devastated Angola, destroying most of its infrastructure, including energy plants and networks.
Critics have accused Dos Santos, in power since 1979, of doing too little to fight poverty since winning the war against rebel group UNITA in Africa's second-largest oil producer.
The MPLA is widely expected to win the election - which will choose lawmakers and president - due to its superior resources. It has pledged to turn its attention to reducing poverty, which it says affected 39 percent of Angolans in 2009.
Despite substantial investments in the sector since the end of the conflict, electricity service in unreliable throughout Angola. Consumers and businesses are forced to buy expensive generators because of long and regular outages.
The president fired the energy minister in December, blaming her for the sector's poor performance. Analysts say 30 percent of the population of around 18 million has access to electricity. ? Continued...

Bernanke says there's room for Fed to act further
WASHINGTON (AP) ? Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke makes clear in a letter to a House lawmaker that he thinks the Fed can do more to bolster the economic recovery and help reduce unemployment.
Bernanke also defends steps the Fed has already taken.
"There is scope for further action by the Federal Reserve to ease financial conditions and strengthen the recovery," Bernanke says in the letter, which responds to questions posed by California Rep. Darrell Issa, a Republican.
Issa is chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
Bernanke notes in the letter that with interest rates already at record lows, the Fed has had to deploy other means to strengthen the economy, such as buying bonds. The goal of the bond purchases has been to lower rates to encourage borrowing and spending.
The bond purchases "have helped to promote a stronger recovery than otherwise would have occurred," Bernanke wrote in the letter.
At its last policy meeting, the Fed had signaled a growing inclination to act further to help the economy.
Stocks reversed their losses Friday after the letter was reported by The Wall Street Journal.
The Fed already has completed two programs aimed at driving down interest rates to encourage more borrowing and spending. It bought more than $2 trillion in Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities, expanding its balance sheet above $2.8 trillion.
The central bank has been running a program for nearly a year in which it sells short-term Treasurys and buys longer-term Treasurys. The program, called Operation Twist, will run through the end of the year and shift $667 billion from short-term to longer-term Treasurys.
Asked by Issa about the impact of that program, Bernanke says its initial phase "is still working its way through the economic system."
Because it takes time for interest-rate policy actions to have an effect, Bernanke says the Fed's policies depend on the expected future performance of the economy.
He rejects suggestions that the Fed is subject to political pressure that would limit its ability to raise rates to tame inflation, should prices get out of control. Bernanke says that as an independent agency, the Fed "will be steadfast in its adherence to the task of promoting the dual mandate given by the Congress ? to promote price stability and maximum sustainable employment."
Many analysts are looking to a speech by Bernanke next Friday at the annual Fed conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo., to provide further guidance on any new actions.
Even if the Fed launched a third round of bond purchases, few think that further lowering long-term rates would provide much benefit to the U.S. economy. Most businesses and consumers who aren't borrowing now aren't likely to change their minds if rates slipped a bit more.
One voting member of the Fed's policy committee told The Associated Press last week that the Fed's power to fix the U.S. economy is limited now. Jeffrey Lacker, head of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, said the Fed can only do so much to lower the 8.3 percent unemployment rate. Lacker alone has dissented from the past five Fed statements that sketched out steps intended to bolster the economy.
The minutes of the Fed's most recent policy meeting, released this week, suggested that it might be ready to launch a new bond buying program as soon as the next meeting, Sept. 12-13.

With her neighborhood situated far from any rivers, lakes or levees, Blanca Pace never thought to get flood insurance.
Until, as she learned, it was too late.
Pace remembered opening her back door on a breezy May morning while she prepared breakfast ? looking through her kitchen window, she watched thousands of gallons of water crash through her fence, wash away years of landscaping and flow into her home.
?At first I thought, ?I need a towel,? and then I thought, ?I need a broom,?? she said, still started from the sudden water more than two months later. ?Then I thought, ?No, I need help.??
A lifetime of furniture and keepsakes now stockpiled in her living room, Pace described her day-to-day life since that morning.
?It feels horrible to live this way,? she said. ?I get up every morning and say, ?When is this going to end???
Carpets and floors in her home of 22 years now ruined and landscaping destroyed, Pace calculated about $75,000 in damage.
But her insurance company, Ameriprise, refused to help ? sending a letter saying she?s not covered.
?They say they cannot represent me because this is a flood,? she said.
Stuck alone fighting her neighbor?s insurance company, Allstate, Pace rejected offers of about $11,000, about $51,000, and then about $ 59,000, she said.
She can?t afford to pay thousands of her own money out of pocket.
?There?s at least $10,000, $15,000 difference here, and I don?t have that type of money,? she said.
?This isn?t truly surface water,? argues consumer attorney Eric Ratinoff, who specializes in insurance cases. ?This is an event.?
Pace never should have had to fight her neighbor?s insurance company ? her own insurance company should have covered the damage, Ratinoff said.
?This sudden, accidental event that occurs where their house floods should be covered under this policy,? he said.
But Ameriprise stood firm, telling CBS13 Pace?s policy specifically excludes surface water damage.
Pace filed a complaint with the Department of Insurance, which told her it?s now investigating Ameriprise.
?I see all this devastation and I don?t know when it?s going to end,? she said.
After CBS13 got involved, Allstate raised its offer to about $70,000 to cover the damage, she said, which she accepted.
Now the race is on to restore her home.
?I am a determined person, and I am a survivor,? Pace said. ?I will get it done.?

Mai Mai chief ready for war against DR Congo rebels
Janvier Karairi, leader of a militia force in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, says that the government and the army have come begging his help in defeating a local Tutsi rebellion.
Karairi's movement is formed of traditional fighters like many other Mai Mai groups, whose fierce reputation is based partly on their beliefs and practices. They believe they can dodge bullets if their hair is styled a certain way and sprinkle themselves with sacred water before battle.
To reach the headquarters of Karairi's Alliance of the People for a Free and Sovereign Congo (APCLS), you must cross a rope bridge over a stream near Lukweti village in the volcanic hills of Nord-Kivu province north of the provincial capital Goma.
Karairi claims to command three brigades, or 4,500 men, which cannot be independently verified. Their range of operations neighbours an area conquered to the north and northwest of Goma, by rebels of M23, a Tutsi force of mutineers who deserted from the army from April and represent a significant regional threat.
On Tuesday, Karairi recalls, two helicopters of the UN mission in DR Congo, MONUSCO, landed on the football field of the nearly village, carrying a member of parliament, Mwami Bahati, who is also a tribal chief, a UN representative and the deputy commander of the military zone in Nord-Kivu province.
"They came to ask me to form an alliance with the army to fight M23," the neatly bearded Karairi said, adding that he agreed with one condition, that his men should not be mingled with those of those of the Congolese army (FARDC) "because they have M23 people within their ranks."
"We want our own line of attack," he explained, adding that he had asked the army for weapons and equipment. During their visit to the Mai Mai base, AFP journalists saw no heavy weapons. Apart from a few big machine-guns and RPG rocket launchers, the fighters had AK47s.
In 2004, Karairi said, he accepted a government offer to join the FARDC, during a time of integration after a war that ravaged much of the vast country, but when an ethnic Tutsi colonel was placed in command of his unit, he left with his men.
"The enemy of the APLCS is he who accepts the invasion of the Congo by Rwanda, Uganda or Burundi," he stated, stressing that he was firmly "anti-Tutsi".
Rwanda, which has several times intervened militarily in DR Congo, has a government largely led by Tutsis, the main victims of the genocide of 1994 in which some 800,000 people were massacred by Hutus. The Kigali regime has been accused by the United Nations of backing M23 -- an allegation it strongly denies.
M23 forces have neither advanced nor fallen back in the past month, according to civilian witnesses and the military. Its men are about 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Goma, and like other movements in the region, it imposes taxes and seeks to administrate areas it controls.
But despite this relative stability, the M23 rebellion has destabilised the whole province, opening the way for other armed groups to become active and fight to gain ground or take control of mineral resources. Apart from seeking local allies to fight M23, the Kinshasa government is looking to the UN for help.
MONUSCO spokesman in Kinshasa, Madnodje Mounoubai, two weeks ago spoke of a "red line" based on current positions and warned that UN forces could intervene if there was a direct threat to the scores of thousands of displaced people in Goma.
Karairi denies any contact with the Hutu Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), which hides out in the forests of eastern DR Congo and is seen as a constant cross-border threat to Rwanda, including people who participated in the genocide.
"The FDLR is the business of the United Nations," Karairi said. "It's up to them to do everything possible to make the FDLR return home."
A former trader from Kichanga, northwest of Goma, who is welcoming with journalists, Karairi is clearly well respected. Nobody talks until he allows them to and everybody gets up when he comes into a room.
At the APCLS training camp at Nyabiondo, about 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Lukweti, straw huts provide shelter for women and children. A DR Congo army camp is installed close by. A little further away, a MONUSCO base is home to UN troops from India who are supplied by helicopter.
On the road back from Lukweti, two armed men in civilian clothes tried to hide when the car approached. "They're FDLR," said an APCLS fighter who was escorting the journalists.

A crime scene can be defined from macroscopic and microscopic points of view.? The macroscopic view focuses on crime scenes within a crime scene in the manner of previously mentioned examples. ?The microscopic view culminates in the aggregation of individual physical elements relating the crime. ?Every case investigated can contain multiple macro and microscopic scenes.? The interrelations between these definitions must all be considered as each has the potential to yield information critical to the investigation and eventual prosecutorial effort.? The Challenge
When looking at the construct of a crime scene the one universal constant is its complexity.? So why is the primary methodology of crime scene investigation still reliant on the pencil and yellow legal pad as the tool of choice??? Every law enforcement agency has a formal procedure for the method by which written documentation is recorded and used.? The primary goal of this exercise is the accurate recording of the information with an eye on the future information sharing requirements of the case and/or future potentially related cases.? The Miami Dade Police Department Crime Scene Investigations unit uses a narrative section divided into five categories.? These categories are summary, scene, processing, and evidence collected, and pending.? Miami Dade Investigator Mike Byrd relates a recent request illustrating the importance of complete, detailed, and accurate recording of investigative information:?
??Recently I was asked to give an opinion on the crime scene portion of a cold case investigation which had occurred more than 20 years earlier. I agreed to take a look at everything to give my interpretation of the crime scene from the work product. So the reports and pictures were ordered from the original files.
When the items came in the mail the report consisted of a one page, one paragraph narrative. The scene photographs consisted of several overall prospective of a wooded area. I could be of no assistance to my fellow colleague. But the experience best illustrates how important it is to properly use the tools at hand. We are brought in to assist in the beginning stages of an investigation when very limited information is known. We should realize that our work product may need to be viewed extensively by someone years from now for interpretation.? ?(Byrd, 2010-2012).
Why we still relay on century old tools to support investigations with twenty first century expectations with regard to accuracy, detail, and recall is indicative of a traditional institution still clinging to the familiarity and perceived reliability of past methods while still operating in a contemporary society. So why is this attitude prevalent?? One could argue that these are time honored traditions with a proven track record.? Modern forensics goes back centuries.? Generally speaking the first modern forensic science publication detailing an investigative technique is attributed to by Tz'u Sung.? His thirteenth century text, ?Hsi Duan Yu? (the Washing Away of Wrong) was written in 1248 AD. It detailed a process of distinguishing drowning from strangulation, portions of which are still used today. (Sung, 1248, 1981)? It has been the introduction of digital forensics, digital still and video, and the leap forward in DNA evidence thanks to the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) technology invented by Nobel prize winner Kary Mullis that has become the tip of the investigative spear.
Current Choices?
The use of computers in crime scene analysis and forensic investigation has been a growing phenomenon over the last twenty years.? However the use of computers at a crime scene is not as widespread as you may come to expect in this day and age.? Crime scene utilization of a tool most Americans accept as commonplace is largely restricted to the gathering and processing of digital evidence, the area some investigators refer to as the ?crime scene within the crime scene?.? This additional dimension, if you will, is focused on the information that can be gleaned from a computer when it is treated as evidence.? A computer itself is, typically, only one piece of physical evidence, but it can be processed to identify thousands of pieces of digital evidence and each piece of digital evidence can be analyzed to identify ownership, location, and timing. (Carrier & Spafford, 2003)?
With increasing expectations with regard to documentation what are the options?? Law enforcement departments in two Tennessee counties have turned to the Apple? iPad?.?? The Jefferson County Police Department recently purchased 19 Apple iPads, one for each officer, with a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. ?In adjacent Knox County, Sheriff?s Office Major Crimes and Family Crisis units recently began using the tablet computers, and detectives have enjoyed the mobility the iPads give them.? Functionality inherent in the popular devices proved to be the selling points.? Applications, known as ?Apps? from the Apple? store allow officers to leverage the touch screen to draw sketches.? Built in microphones facilitate recording testimony at crime scenes while WiFi and CDMA allow officers to send reports, share information with colleagues and investigate background information without calling dispatch.?(Katims, 2011) The iPad is an impressive device.? In 2010 the New York Times proclaimed that 2010 would be the ?Year of the Tablet.? (Daigneau, 2011)? In retrospect Apple dominated the market forcing the competition to delay or table forecasted launches in a scramble to produce competitively priced and feature rich challengers.? ?[iPads] could critically accelerate and improve our utilization of digital information, and through that, the performance of government. Thus, they possess great strategic potential, but they could also serve as a risky distraction?.?(Mechling, 2011)? But the iPad is not without its drawbacks, as web columnist Jerry Mechling alludes to in the afore mentioned quote.? Apple? maintains strict control over application development, licensing and deployment.? ?The device was created to allow an individual unlimited access to information but does so in a completely closed system.? Security tools built into the device are not without their vulnerabilities.? The fact that the Apple? ?Jailbreak? community often has security patches published on the web before Apple? does is indicative of the weaknesses in the Apple? armor. The simplicity of the iPad masks its transformational power.? Navigating with your fingers rather than a keyboard marks a fundamental change in user interfaces.??Despite its success the iPad? is not the only game in town.?? In the two years the iPad? has been on the street a plethora of manufactures have entered the market with strongly competitive devices and operating systems.? Enter the other industry behemoth Microsoft.? In late 2012 Microsoft? will release Windows 8 with an accompanying tablet PC version. Partnered with Nvidia?, supplying the Tegra 3? chip to be used with ARM based hardware, Microsoft will move to level the playing field currently dominated by Apple? and protagonist Android?.? Although this does not herald a coming competitive nirvana it does open the door to adaptation of software solutions known to the public safety community as well as allowing the open source community its opportunity to make a mark.???

Lawyers are scheduled to deliver closing arguments Tuesday and a nine-person jury in federal court in San Jose, Calif., is expected to begin deliberations later that afternoon or Wednesday morning.
Apple is demanding Samsung pay it $2.5 billion and pull its most popular smartphones and computer tablets from the U.S. market after accusing the South Korean company of "ripping off" its iPhone and iPad technology. Samsung, in turn, is demanding Apple pay it $399 million for allegedly using Samsung's technology without proper payments in making the iconic iPhones and iPads.

Update: While the official statement is that the Red Sox will decide Carl Crawford?s fate Monday, ESPN is reporting that the decision has already been made that Crawford will undergo Tommy John surgery on Tuesday, making tonight?s game his last of the season.

Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine said the Red Sox will meet on the off day Monday and make a decision on Tommy John surgery for Carl Crawford.
Crawford and doctors are expected to be involved in the meeting.
Rumor has Crawford preferring to undergo surgery now, which should ensure that he?s ready to play next spring. The Red Sox, though, might want to put it off, figuring that he could still be ready for Opening Day even if he waits until after the season to undergo surgery.
With a .309 average, two homers and 15 RBI in 17 games this month, Crawford has been one of the team?s best players of late.
In spite of all of the team?s struggles, the Red Sox still have some shot at a playoff berth, thanks largely to the addition of the second wild card. Of course, they would have to catch fire, something they haven?t done at any point this season. NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? Authorities say a United Airlines flight has landed safely at Newark after taking off from the airport for Berlin then returning when something apparently went wrong with the engine.
Airline spokesman Joe Micucci said the Boeing 757 "experienced a mechanical issue with the engine" after takeoff from Newark Liberty International Airport at 5:50 p.m. Saturday. He said Flight 96 landed safely about 8:10 p.m.
